Save time and money by making your own self watering containers
You do not need me to tell you how useful containers are for growing flowers and vegetables, especially if space is tight. They are great for patios, balconies, and even window boxes.
It does not matter if your garden is to damp or to dry. With containers you can plant bog plants in the driest of gardens and arid loving plants, like Mediterranean herbs, in the wettest of spots. As long as their other needs for light and shelter are met, of course!
You can even have acid soil loving plants, whatever the [ph] of your ground, by just adding the right growing mix to your container.
They are truly perfect for growing plants and vegetables anywhere except for one big draw back!
They need constant watering! and with that comes another big problem, accidentally giving them to much water. In fact, did you realize that over-watering in one of main causes of plant death? You see there is no real way to judge how much water to put in your container. To much and the plants die, to little and they under perform, in which case you do not really find out until it is to late.
There is however a solution and that comes in the form of self watering containers. The theory developed out of “ring culture” that was developed to grow prize tomatoes and once you get the hang of it you can adapt it for nearly any sort of container.
This allows your plants and vegetables to take just the right of amount of water they need. The best news is you just have occasionally top up the container's reservoir, instead of watering two or three times a day. Just imagine how much time and money you could save if you did not have to constantly spend time watering this summer!
You can buy commercial ones, but they can work out a bit expensive if you need more than a few. They are also handy for flowers but you will need more if you are thinking about “grow your own” home vegetable
production.
