The DIY Wormery Manual
If you are serious about helping the environment as well as saving money, you are probably already composting your kitchen and garden waste. I have always been wary about putting something in the compost that might attract vermin, like rats. So after a bit of research I decided perhaps I should try a DIY wormery as well.
Why Spend out big Bucks?
You can spend some big bucks buying a commercial plastic wormery but if you look around on the web there are plenty of people giving tips on their blogs on how to build one yourself on the cheap
.
Some of these designs are successful, some are not! In this spirit of this website's philosophy of "Making Money and saving the world" I would like to recommend you get a copy of "The D.I.Y. Wormery Manual" by Gareth Hogan.
This is one of the best sources I have found so far. From his own experience he explains it all, from simple boxes to building stacked versions, to designs for a wooden Bee hive style Wormery that you can build and sell.
Why should you build a wormery?
Selling at around £150 each, if you built and sold two a week, that would be an extra income of just over £15,000 a year, less your material costs.
Three a week would push your turnover up to over £22,000. If you build anymore than that a week it would probably start feeling like a full time job.
Do not expect detailed plans, there is just enough to allow you build your own design (or get someone to build it for you). Anyway we do not all want to be selling the same model.
I am going for a hybrid version of the second full beehive shape but with four dumpy legs. I am looking to recycle some old pallets (untreated, of course!) for the wooden sides. I can get Cat litter trays locally for 99p which I think will be ideal and use the plastic taps of old "Wine Boxes".
